FAQS
How is sports massage different from regular massage?
While both offer therapeutic benefits, sports massage is specifically designed to address the needs of physically active individuals and those with chronic pain or injuries.
Sports Massage:
  • Uses deeper pressure and more intense techniques to target specific problem areas
  • Focuses on injury prevention and recovery, working on muscle groups affected by repetitive movements
  • Incorporates stretching and manipulation to improve flexibility and range of motion
  • Addresses scar tissue, adhesions, and chronic tension that develop from physical activity
  • Can be targeted pre-event (to prepare muscles) or post-event (to aid recovery)
  • Often includes assessment of posture, movement patterns, and muscle imbalances
Regular/Swedish Massage:
  • Primarily focuses on relaxation and stress relief
  • Uses lighter, flowing strokes to promote overall wellbeing
  • Works on the entire body rather than specific problem areas
  • Ideal for general tension release and improving circulation
The Bottom Line: Think of sports massage as clinical and corrective, while regular massage is more about relaxation. At Liya Sports Therapy, we assess your individual needs and customize treatments—whether you're training for a marathon or simply dealing with desk-related tension.
What should I wear?
The short answer: Whatever makes you feel comfortable!
Our Recommendations:
For Sports/Deep Tissue Massage:
  • Men: Underwear or loose shorts are ideal. You can remain fully clothed if preferred—we can work through lightweight clothing.
  • Women: Underwear and sports bra, or comfortable athletic wear. Many clients wear gym leggings and a sports top.
For Relaxation Treatments (Swedish, Hot Stones):
  • Most clients undress to their comfort level and are covered with towels throughout
  • We only uncover the area being worked on at any given time
  • You can choose to keep underwear on or remove it—entirely your choice.
  • We provide fresh towels and draping for every client
  • Your privacy and comfort are our top priority—we step out of the room while you prepare
  • For first-time clients who are unsure, we recommend starting with more clothing and adjusting as you feel comfortable
  • Avoid wearing jewelry, watches, or perfume/cologne as oils may affect them
  • If you're coming straight from work or the gym, feel free to change in our treatment room
